Honoring the Women Who Shaped Us: A Mother’s Day Reflection
As a woman and small business owner, Mother’s Day holds a very special place in my heart. When my mother, Kay, and I founded Lifestyles of Saratoga back in 1991, we set out to create more than just a store—we built a community rooted in family, tradition, and a shared love of timeless style.
But the story doesn’t start there. Long before Lifestyles opened its doors, I was shaped by the strong women who came before me. My mother was my partner in every sense, and some of you may remember her from our earlier venture, Nostalgia, on the corner of Caroline and Broadway.
Behind the scenes—and often literally behind the counter—was also my grandmother, Roxie May Smith. A hairdresser by trade and a powerhouse by nature, she was stylish, spunky, and endlessly supportive. Whether she was helping us scrape and paint a new location or unpacking boxes late into the night, Roxie was always there. Her spirit even lives on in our vintage Shasta pop-up shop, affectionately named “Roxie,” inspired by the camping trips we once took together in the Maine wilderness.
This Mother’s Day, I find myself reflecting on how these women influenced not just who I am, but what Lifestyles has become. It’s about more than fashion—it’s about connection, memories, and the legacy we pass from one generation to the next.
Mother’s Day hits differently for everyone. Some of us celebrate with our moms here on earth, others carry the memory of mothers we’ve lost. Some are mothers themselves—or step into that role with love and grace. And some carry the deep ache of loss as mothers who have lost children. No matter where you find yourself in that spectrum, this day is about honoring the strength, resilience, and love of the women who shape our lives.
To all the mothers, daughters, grandmothers, mentors, and friends—you are the heart of our story. Thank you for inspiring us, for lifting us, and for letting us be a part of your journey.
Wishing you a day filled with love, laughter, and moments to cherish.
With love and gratitude,
Heidi
